S2 EP51: Unlocking Self-Love with Clayton Echard

It's as if I was shattered into pieces. And then what I had to do is, I had to grab each of those individual pieces and look at it and say, is this something that I want to continue to carry?” – Clayton (48:15)

In this week’s episode of Off the Cuff with Danny LoPriore, we had an amazing conversation with mental health and wellness advocate, author, and star of “The Bachelor” Clayton Echard. We discussed the concept of mindfulness, his struggles with weight and body dysmorphia, and the mental toll that being on “The Bachelor” took on him.

“I have been able to find self-love that I haven’t ever had in my life.  So I’ve been able to grasp that in the last three or four months.  Honestly, it’s been relatively new, but I still pinch my stomach fifty to sixty times a day.” Clayton (17:53)

While Clayton is no longer with his ex from the show, Susie Evans, he opened up about how she was a big part of his journey to practicing mindfulness.

“I didn’t even think that mindfulness was a thing until a year and a half ago when it was brought up to me by my now ex.  And she was like, ‘I think you should look into some of these resources, it’s going to help you better control your thought process.’” Clayton (20:30)

While Clayton’s journey of being on reality TV was extremely hard on his mental health, he doesn’t regret it, because it made him who he is today.  And while no one has yet asked Clayton to participate in the franchise spin-off “Bachelor In Paradise,” he is surprisingly open to it because he now has the tools to properly deal with his emotions.

“As people saw on the show, I lost my cool at one point.  I completely just lost it on my ex.  And I’m embarrassed by it now that I watch it back.  But that’s because I had no experience, and I had a flood of thoughts rush into my head a million miles an hour.  It was a rush of emotion.  I could not control my emotions because I was trying to make sense of everything.  So if I went back into it, I would be able to go back in with a better grasp of my emotions.” Clayton (44:20)
