Episode 48: Life after Divorce with Kenya Duke

“So, for me, I didn't grieve the loss of the marriage. I grieved the loss of the relationship between the kids and their dad.”

Going through divorce or separation after decades of marriage is one prospect no one want to go through. We see examples of that in the media all the time. Arnold and Maria. Bill and Melinda Gates. The list goes on. My guest today was married to a Hollywood celebrity, a famous comedian, and went through this tough process of divorce after 20 years of marriage and mother of three children.

Today I am joined by entrepreneur, TV personality, and host of the popular podcast Truly Kenya, Kenya Duke. She sits down with me to talk about her recent divorce with famous comedian Gary Owen and how she is coping with the whole thing while being a responsible mom looking after the wellbeing of her kids.

“So, for me, I didn't grieve the loss of the marriage. I grieved the loss of the relationship between the kids and their dad.”– Kenya (12:00)

Parting ways after 20 years of marriage is no easy thing. During my conversation with Kenya, she offers me useful advice on marriage as I look forward to tying the knot in a few months. She also talks about coping with the grief and how she stayed positive.as she went through a process no woman wishes to go through.

“But on my worst day, I was still happy, and I wouldn't have changed anything. $0 in the bank. Payment arrangements for everything. But I was still happy.” – Kenya (13:15)

One of the most important things to do to get through divorce is to be truthful to yourself and be realistic. If you tell yourself lies long enough, your mind starts to believe it and that’s one state of mind you don’t want to be.

“So, liars tell lies enough that they really start to believe their lies.” – Kenya (29:14)
